About the Essentials of Catholic Liturgy
The Essentials of Catholic Liturgy (ECL) is an engaging, interactive online course offered through a partnership between the National Association of Pastoral Musicians and Liturgy Training Publications. Designed in distinct tracks, it supports the formation of those serving in or preparing for liturgical and music ministry, including individuals pursuing NPM certification.
The ECL virtual training course is designed for those serving in music ministry and other liturgical roles who seek a clear and accessible foundation in the Church’s worship.
The core content of ECL remains consistent with sessions offered since 2018, while the program has been thoughtfully restructured and refreshed to enhance the learning experience, and those who have previously completed ECL are not required to repeat the course. New for 2026, the Music Ministry Leadership Track offers additional formation and may be taken independently by past participants who wish to deepen their skills.
All sessions are live and interactive to encourage full participation, with recordings available to registered participants for up to two months after the final session. Learn more about the LTP virtual training experience here.
ECL provides the essential liturgical knowledge and practical skills required for certification through the National Association of Pastoral Musicians while fostering growth through guided feedback and a supportive learning community.
Participants are expected to complete assigned readings in preparation for each session, with optional supplemental articles and videos available to further enrich the learning experience.
About the Music Ministry Leadership Certification Track
This track equips music ministers with essential skills for planning and leading music in the Church’s worship. It introduces foundational theory, practical tools, and effective rehearsal strategies for strong and confident leadership. Participants will complete assignments reviewed by NPM representatives while developing the administrative and pastoral skills needed for music ministry.
